A friend and I (the Outhouses of America Tour Curator) decided to make a visit to Canada and enjoy the nice summer weather in August 2026. We drove to the Ferry at Algonac, Michigan USA and took the ferry across to the Canadian Customs Ferry location on Walpole Island. From there we went to Wallaceburg, Ontario and had a fantastic day. One very interesting fact that I discovered there is that most everything is actually cheaper than in the US due to the following: The favorable exchange rate from US to Canadian dollars. Gas there calculated out to be $3.10 per gallon USD. Food in restaurants was actually cheaper on average than eating out in the US as well. So as of August 2026, if you want to get more for your US dollar, head to Ontario Canada.
This “Porta-John” was located right at the Canadian Customs ferry dock on Walpole Island Canada and while we were there, a small freighter sailed by. More information on the Indigenous people living on the island is below.
The island near Wallaceburg, Ontario is Walpole Island, and the Indigenous people who live there belong to the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa nations. Together, they form the Walpole Island First Nation, and they call their community and territory Bkejwanong (meaning “where the waters divide” in the Anishinaabemowin language).

- Collective Identity: Part of the historic Council of Three Fires.
